“Diamonds and Paupers”

By: Keithayonna Davis

Distorted images comfort me.
Daydreaming
As I down a glass to the foam.

There was no love in that city.
Just tall buildings and pissy alleyways.

Where you can kiss a hundred frogs,
And they’ll still be frogs.

Crown shifting
As I search for reality in fairy tales.

Thinking of him
Him
And him.
Holding tight to the look in their eyes that made me wish things were different.

A dusty narrative .
Pages filled with lines about a misplaced princess
Finding her place in the rough.

Paupers,
Witches,
Trolls,
Wise men,
Fools.
Adorned soldiers finding solace in adoration.

Bored,
I flip ahead to the climax.

Where her smile fades as she realizes the pretty lace dress is squeezing at her breasts.
Her slippers are worn and too small for her feet.
Her crown,
A mere joke encrusted with diamonds.

In the end,
She is alone.

A cacoon cracks in the distance.
It’s fate relying on a small branch
As a monarch emerges from it’s deep sleep.
Having put away all childish things.
